What is it?

June in New Zealand is the height of winter. June in Wellington is grey, wet and very wintry. June in the CBD is full of dark clothed workers shooting out (not "up") for lunch before skutlling back to their warm and cosy offices.

June is not fun. We all need some colour, some fun and a lot of cheering up in June.

There is a theory that wearing red shoes never fails to give you a bounce, an inner smile, a certain view on the world that dismisses the weather and knows it can be sunny inside.

June CAN BE fun.

When is it?

It is always the third Friday in June.
For 2010 this is Friday 18th!

How did it come about?

Mike Riversdale bought a pair of sparkly red shoes but couldn't find a reason to wear them during work hours and yet he proudly talked about them to anyone and everyone.

Staff @MojoOldBank where sick of hearing about these seemingly mythical pair of shoes and challenged Mike to wear them ... and on Friday 17th June 2009, Red Shoes Day was born.

What should I do?

Wear red shoes on Friday 18th June, 2010 ... and smile.
BUT, if you don't own a pair of red shoes have no fear as they are merely a symbol that we ain't gonna take the no-fun June anymore!
In fact red shoes may not even be allowed for you at your work, especially those that have a prescribed uniform to adhere to.

Wear anything that makes you smile!
Last year people wore:

Brooches that sparkled
Their favourite wacky tie
Favourite undies (we believed them, no evidence required)
Fancy jackets
...

This isn't about raising money, this isn't about selling items (although if you're a shoe shop you might want to promote it ;-). It's about us all shrugging off the June winter blues and having a smile.

In homage to the birth of Red Shoes Day Mojo Coffee around New Zealand are promoting the 2010 day with a free coffee for all those that wear red shoes.
